Meeting a need

Physical disabilities involve some restriction of movement or loss of agility such as difficulty walking, carrying an object a short distance or grasping objects. 

  • 12% of New Zealanders live with a physical disability
  • 25% of people lving with a physical disability require help with daily tasks
  • 75% require an assistive device of help with more difficult household tasks
  • People living with physical disability can often experience poor access to support services and working arrangements

Mobility dogs are partnered with people living with long term physical disabilities including cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries. 

 

The Mobility Assistance Dogs Trust:  

  • conforms to ADI - Assistance Dog International - standards
  • trains dogs in public access protocol and advanced assistance dog tasks
  • educates and supports recipients in the management, handling and care of their dog, essential to the long-term success of the human-canine 'working team'
  • manages the Puppies in Prison programme in partnership with the Department of Corrections 
  • receives no government funding

Mobility Dogs relies on funding, donations and sponsorship to maintain its Canine Development Programme. There is no cost to our recipients for the mobility dog itself.  How to help us.
